It happened. There wasn’t any doubt really, but I had them anyway. On January 9, 2013, I was notified that my library was awarded the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf grant I had applied for. My first grant award. Ever.
Implementation of program plans, heavy-duty writing of communication releases, and preparations for the Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys grant opportunity (which I call MJ2) are now underway.
So many people to thank, so many things still to do. Our partners, University of Redlands Campus Diversity & Inclusion and Redlands Peace Academy, are invaluable. Stephanie Milner, SJSU-SLIS student and Armacost Library intern, is an astounding writing collaborator.
First up, a party! An opening reception for University communities and the public is scheduled for Sunday, February 17, 2013, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the 3rd floor of Armacost Library. This is the opportunity we will take to introduce the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf and stress the importance of enlightened conversation in a diverse, multicultural society. Light refreshments will be served.
Then, we’ll have a film showing and facilitated discussion of Prince Among Slaves to mark Black History Month. Dr. Patrick Wing, professor of history at University of Redlands, will be facilitating discussion. We will hold the first showing of Prince Among Slaves on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at University of Redlands Gregory Hall 161, from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. We are working to hold another showing of the film sometime in March at the Redlands Peace Academy facilities. All programs associated with Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys are open and free to the public. (At least that’s the plan.)
A web-based research guide with all Muslim Journeys @ UofR information, including program materials, is still being developed.
I do need RSVPs. I need these by 2/4/13 for the Bookshelf Opening Reception. For the film showing, I need to know by 2/14/13. If you are in my area of Southern California (or part of the City of Redlands and University of Redlands communities), I’d love to hear from you!
